ANNA BOCEK

Artist Statement

“My inspiration for painting is the theater, both as artist and viewer. I am drawn to the humanity of the characters living on stage, rather than the physical space of the theater itself. I am fascinated by the gestures, grimaces and emotions that convey the depth of our human spirit. I love color, contrast, texture and form. My portraits have been described “vibrant and dramatic, and at the same time dark and brooding,” and have been compared to those of Lucien Freud.”

About Anna Bocek

Anna Bocek was born in Poland in 1973 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk, Poland where she is now a member of the faculty. She has won a number of prestigious awards, including first prize for the Best Shakespearean Set Design from Prince Charles’ Theatrum Gedanense Foundation. In fact it is the theater that inspires her paintings.

The figures and faces painted by Anna Bocek are full of expressions and gesture; emotions are brilliantly captured. Her paintings are studies of human nature, feelings and sensual experiences. Her artwork is bright, vibrant and overflowing with energy and passion.

Bocek has exhibited in Poland, Spain, the USA, UK, France, Czech Republic, Germany and Sweden and she has works in many Polish Museums.
