Robert MARS’ compelling and evocative works are an homage to the Post War icons of Hollywood and Fashion. Romantic and seductive, these reinterpreted images continue to resonate within contemporary American culture and worldwide fascination. Mars appropriates the icons of luxury brands into captivating visual collages that merge typography with a study of color and pattern Through this hybrid distillation, he chronicles the romanticized imagery, and cherished fragments of a bygone era. A technique culled from Rauschenberg’s own, Mars employs collage as the ultimate arbiter and documentarian of such select historical moments. Realized through a method of continual overlay and deconstruction he builds the surface of his backgrounds and then overlays the object and/or iconic personages. Further solidifying himself as a unique assembler of nostalgia, and Neo –Pop work, Mars immersed himself in the continued study of Americana, including Folk Art and the simultaneous study of Contemporary Quilt-makers. His fusing of vintage wallpapers and magazine covers, with quilt patterns, and his own au courant sensibility to technique and a keen pulse to, as Warhol, present day consumerism, Mars has created and assembled a Pop aesthetic that distinguishes his work. The result is sexy, fun and always memorable.
Mars is a graduate of the Parsons School of Design and had spent decades as a graphic designer, which continues to inform his work. He is collected worldwide, in distinguished collections, both public and private.
